Pinot Grigio Ramato is a copper-hued skin-contact wine style originating from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy.
The word comes from rame, the Italian word for copper.
Unlike green-skinned white grapes, Pinot Grigio (Pinot Gris) has naturally rosy-grey to coppery-blue skins.
While standard Pinot Grigio is pressed quickly and fermented without the skins to yield a pale, neutral white, Ramato undergoes skin maceration (ranging from a few hours up to a couple of weeks). This pulls natural pigment, subtle tannins, and extra body from the skins.
